Not all of tea buying's travel is to far flung tropical locations: Kate Roch recently made an unusual trip to the peppermint and chamomile fields of Eastern Germany, to see how some of our herbal products are produced.
The cooperative has over 700 hectares of herbs under cultivation, equating to over 900 football pitches in size, and as such it is the largest producer of its kind in Germany. In true eco-friendly fashion, the plant is run entirely on biofuel produced from the cooperative's own rapeseed oil.
Over 2 million kilos of chamomile flowers and peppermint leaves are harvested every year to produce 400,000 kilos of finished product. For quality reasons the whole herb, including the stem, is dried, then any waste product is separated. |
