Rick in Zambia

Our Coffee Buyer Rick Tingley recently travelled to Zambia. Read his account of his return visit to Terranova Farm to see the great improvements since his Social Audit there a year ago.

"Terranova Farm is situated on the rolling hills of the Kaleya Valley, in the south of the country and the coffee grown on its 250 hectares supports up to 70,000 people in the local community.

The owner, Colin Street, grows coffee for our Lazy Sunday and Rich Italian blends- I was really pleased to find that Colin has made considerable efforts to improve working conditions on the farm since I was last there.

Our commitment to paying a fair price for Colin’s coffee has helped buy Wellington boots for the safety of the workers in the wet mill. First aid boxes, guards and handrails have been installed too, but the most dramatic changes have been to the school on the farm; a fabulous new library stuffed full of books has been built, and shady, grassy areas have been created for the children to sit during breaktime. Further improvements are planned: the creation of a computer room at the school, as well as a medical centre for workers and families."
