Take a look in your local Sainsbury’s and as well as finding our range of coffees from around the world, you may now find the sacks they arrived in. Rather than wasting the thousands of strong, durable coffee sacks we receive each year, we’ve teamed up with Eako who specialise in reclaiming and re-using waste materials, to turn these sacks into unique environmentally friendly shopping bags. The raw material that the bags are made from is Jute - a completely natural fabric which is ultimately biodegradable. And because the coffee sacks come from several countries and farms, each one has its own story.
Profits from every bag purchased will go towards coffee grower programmes, such as one of our growers’ projects in La Colonia, Nicaragua. The sustainable prices we pay for our beans have already helped the farmer at La Colonia to invest in his land, his coffee and his staff. Now, we will be using funds from the Bag for Life to help La Colonia achieve the demanding standards of Rainforest Alliance certification. Initially they are going to help fund the development of spent domestic water filtration systems to ensure that all the waste water that the coffee farm generates is cleaned before being returned to the local streams and rivers. Buying a Bag for Life will therefore help to tackle environmental issues both here in the UK and at a farm far away in the mountains of Nicaragua.
