Our Coffee Buyers are celebrating after collecting a prestigious nationwide award, recognising our commitment to fair and ethical trade. And the award was presented to us by none other than HRH, The Prince of Wales, and former United States Vice President, Al Gore.
Now in their 10th year, the Business in the Community Awards recognise the positive impact that businesses can make in the marketplace, workplace, local community and to the environment. This year 425 businesses entered the awards, but just 15 were acknowledged as an ‘Example of Excellence’.
Our commitment to ethical coffee buying was recognised with the ‘Example of Excellence’ in the John Lewis and Waitrose Supply Chain category. The award was presented to us because of our long-term commitment to building direct, personal relationships with growers; the fair, sustainable prices we pay; and our system of audits, which improve living and working conditions for everyone involved in growing our coffee.
Chair of the judges, Charlie Mayfield Chairman of the John Lewis Partnership, wrote:
" Bettys & Taylors showed passion and commitment in improving standards in their supply chain. They’ve continually developed the skills of their employees so that buyers are accredited social auditors. We were impressed by the honesty, commitment and the level of personal involvement of buyers with farmers. They have followed through with determination to implement change of the ground, being sensitive to local issues, but uncompromising on expectations of progress. Their practical and energetic approach make them an ideal winner and an excellent example for other companies."
