How we buy tea ethically |

Rewarding Quality with best prices
We pay good prices for our premium teas. Rather than accept standard market prices, we place our own value on a tea based on the taste and quality that we are looking for in our blends. This often results in us paying higher prices to the smallholder farmers to help them maintain exceptional quality.
Auditing conditions of tea estates
In places like India and Africa a typical tea estate supports a large community of people who live and work on the estate with their families. Housing, schools and health care are all provided, as well as subsidised staple foods, and other benefits. We have a strong responsibility to ensure that all these people are treated properly and respectfully. To do this our Ethical Trading Manager and tea buyers work alongside the Ethical Tea Partnership to monitor and improve conditions on the ground. They benchmark conditions against the Ethical Trading Initiative Base Code.
Each of our Tea Buyers spends over six weeks a year overseas, visiting the estates and working directly with growers looking at conditions of workers on tea estates, including wages and rights, housing, health and safety and the environment. During a typical visit, they would also look at the provison of schooling and health care and visit local hospitals and schools. The very best tea estates and gardens we buy from are recognised with ‘Rewarding Quality’ awards.
Our business is also a member of the Ethical Tea Partnership, which monitors living and working conditions on tea estates. |
