Kate in Rwanda and Kenya

Eight flights in nine days meant Tea Buyer Kate Roch was constantly on the move when she visited two countries and 13 tea estates recently. Here she tells us about her trip to Rwanda and Kenya.

"Rwanda produces some of the finest teas in the world, so it’s vital to visit the producers regularly to ensure we continue to be offered the highest quality teas. I spent time with key producers of the best quality Rwandan tea which we select for our Yorkshire Gold blend.

I also travelled to several estates in two of the key growing districts in Kenya; dealing directly with the producer and forging relationships with the experts who manufacture the tea is an integral part of our buying policy at Taylors of Harrogate.

In Kenya, I also visited a kitchen garden project which had been set up by one of our suppliers to improve the nutrition and health of their staff. The tea estate workers are encouraged to grow their own fruit, vegetables and flowers in demarcated plots of land outside their homes: the plot I visited belonged to Henry, who now grows 38 varieties of produce. Malaria has been reduced dramatically here thanks to trees and shrubs being planted where stagnant pools of water used to form breeding grounds for mosquitoes."
